I'm going to be in Northern California for the month of May. What should I definitely see and do?

Sonoma,Napa, and Mendocino counties. Wineries, take your pick. Take a mud bath in Calistoga. Check out the quaint village of Mendocino, also any beach on the Sonoma/Mendocino coast. Of course the Redwoods. I love Northern Cal. Here's a link to the mud baths; http://www.goldenhaven.com Have Fun and rent a convertible.
You may want to check out Virginia City, Lake Tahoe, and Reno just across the state line in Nevada.

after you see the GG bridge, cruise across and visit the missile silos (ocean side) and sausalito (bay side).
trip to alcatraz,
trip on down to Big Basin to see the large redwoods and camp,
trip on down to santa cruz for fun in the sun
go out to napa and ride the wine train
go to safariwest for fun www.safariwest.com
oakland and SF zoos are great. also in SF check out the Explaoratorium and Academy of NAtural SCiences as well as Lombardo Street OH and twin peaks. also check to see if county activities are going on. you can search for alameda county fairground, santa clara county, etc. as far as roads are concerned. stay off 580 west from 6 am to 11 am weekdays and 580 East from 2pm-6pm weekdays (except on friday - start at 12 pm) stay off 880 all the time. do not go near 238. san jose is lame stay away from there. (esp during cinco de mayo celebration - too many drunk mexicans whooping it up). and for a fun ride - take Patterson pass. you can do a search on it and come up with a few sites like motorcycle and bicycle enthusiasts.

If you can get to the redwoods, do it. Standing next to a 500 yr old tree that is 200 feet tall is impressive. Especially when you realize that's a young one.
